Scouting and Calling Turkeys

In the spring turkeys gather in flocks, focusing on breeding and feeding.

Someone once said that in Spring, hope springs eternal. I'm not sure who said it, but they must have been a turkey hunter.

Any turkey hunter, pursuing these wily birds on public land, has to be an eternal optimist with a heart filled with hope. The recovery of wild turkey populations is one of the greatest rags to riches success stories in America, but bagging one on public land is a test of persistence, planning and perseverance.

While more birds roam the woods now than at any time in our nation's history, the number of hunters is also on the increase. The secret is out. Turkey hunting in the spring is a lot of fun, and everyone wants to get in on the action. If you want to fill the tag you have in your hunting vest, here are a few techniques to consider.

A Quick Spring Boat Inspection.
Author: Frank Ross

Before you launch your boat this year, give everything a good inspection.

Before you launch your boat this spring, check out everything.
Before you launch your boat this spring, check out everything.

It won't be long until boats will find their way out of winter storage, and anglers will be backing them into the water, hoping for a great day of fishing. But if you don't take a little time before you leave the house, you may be back at the dock sooner than you intended. Nothing is more frustrating than a ruined trip, unless it's a trip that got ruined right when the bite turned on. Do yourself a favor and give your boat a thorough going over before it's time to fish. A pre-launch inspection is a very productive way to spend a waning winter day and you'll have time to take care of any problems without having to rush around at the last minute.

This is also a good time to think back to last year's season and remember those things that you were going to add or change before this year - like repositioning rod holders or adding more.

You may need to adapt this list to your own needs, since it covers a wide variety of equipment that you may or may not have. Most of the items on this checklist are things that need a visual inspection, but a few may need more attention.

Broadhead Buyer's Guide
Author: Frank Ross

A broadhead is a large cutting point assembly, attached to an arrow shaft for hunting. The proliferation of broadhead designs and blade configurations are diverse, making the decision on which one to use under a given set of hunting factors confusing, but it doesn't have to be so.

For most bowhunters, broadhead selection is a matter of personal preference.
For most bowhunters, broadhead selection is a matter of personal preference.

Each year manufacturers come out with new models designed to maximize cutting efficiency, minimize flight deviation and increase impact stability, so even if you're content with the broadheads you've been shooting for a long time, it might be worth considering some of the newer broadheads.

Broadheads can be divided into two categories based on their physical makeup and further depending on the number of blades they sport. The two main categories are fixed blade, and mechanical blades. Within those main categories you will find additional variations or sub-categories. Additionally, various designs bridge the basic model descriptions by adding features like cut-on-contact blades on the tip.

For most bowhunters, broadhead selection is a matter of personal preference based on experience, the speed at which they shoot, and the game being sought. If you're new to bowhunting and short on experience, here are some guidelines.

Triple Fish fluorocarbon
Triple Fish Fluorocarbon

Have you tried Triple Fish Line?
In my humble opinion, Triple Fish has the most innovative and technologically advanced lines today. If you're tired of lines that are all blow and no show, try Triple Fish fluorocarbon: The only 100% German-made premium fluorocarbon. It has the precise refractive qualities of water, and not that milky appearance of Asian lines. It has absolutely no memory, but most importantly to cost conscious anglers, it's less expensive than any premium line. Try it with this link, you'll like it! Triple Fish Fluorocarbon
